It's well-known that all three of Seth's shows have followed a similiar formula: a buffoonish lovable father, a hot and patient wife, a dorky son, a smart and/or shut-out daughter, the other son/youngest family member and at least one pet. Now, technically, The Cleveland Show almost doesn't count since Tim The Bear isn't actually part of the family, he's just one of Cleveland's pals. But since it still falls into the talking pet formula, I will still count him. Which ones from each family are your favorite?
Buffonish lovable father
Peter
It's a tough choice, but I think I'll have to go for the classic: Peter Griffin. He's brought me so much laughter throughout all the years, and out of all the characters he's the one where I can think of most of the funniest moments. He's not just my favorite father out of all these three shows, but one of my most beloved characters in general. He never fails to bring me a smile, and I can never imagine Family Guy without that face or goofy voice.
A hot and patient wife
Francine
Lois is undoubtably iconic as well, but I prefer the warm and loving mother from the first 6 seasons. After that she suddenly starts to get harsher, the worst moment being when she literally tells Peter men can't get sexually harrassed. It just doesn't feel right. Francine however always makes me laugh, and she gets some of the greatest jokes. I love the kind of the performance Kristen Schaal gives as her, and is generally much easier to root for. Lois still had her moments in season 7-12 as well, but Francine has continued to stay great as long as I can remember.
A dorky son
Steve
I think Chris is underrated, but Steve is the clear winner here. He could very well be my favorite character in the show, since he's the most likable and wonderfully crazy out of all of them. It doesn't hurt either that he has an impressive singing voice. Just hear some of his songs in the show, you'd be surprised at how swell they sound.
A smart and/or shut-out daughter
Hayley
She's kinda like Seth's version of Lisa: a similiar moral code, but more unhinged. You would see Lisa fighting for better work conditions and protecting the environment, but burning down a forest and raping the annoying guy that tries to get with you? Not exactly. Hayley is smart while still managing to not be the show's straight man, on the contrary capable of just as crazy acts as a lot of the other ones.
An honorable mention goes to Meg, who I would probably pick as my favorite if it wasn't for some unfulfilled potential still left. They gotta get Mila Kunis on set more often, we haven't heard her voice in the show for a while now.
The other son/youngest family member
Stewie
I've given a lot of praise to American Dad now, but when it comes to the best little guy, no doubt about it; Stewie. He's gotten probably the most character development on the whole show, and somehow feels very real in his personality. There are rarely any truly out-of-character moments (they are there, but uncommon), rather it feels like his character has progressed naturally unlike something like Quagmire's hate for Brian or Bonnie's hate for Joe. Throughout season 4-7, you can see his character changing, but it happens so slowly that you barely even notice it at first. He also seems to understand a lot about the world and how people work that the others in his family don't, not even Brian. He might not be a diabolical madman anymore, but a genius? I would say he still is.
At least one pet
Brian
I know most people would pick Roger, and it's perfectly understandable. He comes up with a ton of creative disguises, has a lot of sass to his personality and always goes his own way and doesn't really give a shit what anyone else thinks. In some ways, he actually has a bit of Bender in him. But I'm sorry guys, my heart still goes for Brian. Whether he's a straight man, being smug or just smart-aleck, he's always interesting to watch. He's a very colorful character, which is why many people got emotional when he was first killed off. It can be argued that they've made him more over-the-top later on, but I think that more has to do with a shift in tone. Brian wasn't really an angel when he took advantage of a blind girl, and that was back in season 10. While Roger is hysterically funny at times, I think whenever an episode which doesn't need Roger includes him just to be there, it's a little annoying. But Brian (Petey IV aside) is always fun to watch.
Tim The Bear is not funny.
