So another season of Family Guy is over. Wow, flew right by this time. Feels like it finished in just a few months.
The quality is similar to that of 17, but it's slightly better since it's more consistent this time. You never get any real horrid stinkers like You Can't Handle The Booth! or something as boring as Trump Guy. Even the weakest episodes are still decent.
The characters are as enjoyable as ever, and most of all I'm really glad Meg finally gets more to do. She was conspiciously absent a lot of the time in 16, and although she appears more in 17 she still kinda feels like a background figure sometimes, getting one or two lines so we remember she exists.
This time she not only gets her biggest episode in a long time (Better Off Meg), but even in those where she doesn't have the focus they still make sure to make her presence matter. It's like they realized she can be funny and entertaining beyond just the occasional Meg jab.
The plots are mostly pretty standard, but the most important thing is that the laughs are there. I still enjoy tuning in every week or so to see what the Griffins or other town members will be up to next.
As for flaws, well... the non-resolution endings became a lot more frequent in this season. It didn't end with Yacht Rocky, there were also a couple others like Connie's Celica and the season finale Shepherd's Song. Or they would wrap a story up in the easiest way they could, like in Shanksgiving. I don't like when the writers seem to think that the ending doesn't matter when a bad ending can sometimes impact your opinion majorly. Bri-Da also had an unsatisfying ending since they let Quagmire win even though he was clearly in the wrong.
Lois is the same as last season, though she did come off better than usual in Better Off Meg. Chris however was a noticeable step down. He was more meanspirited than I'd ever seen him before in the aforementioned episode. Sure he can be a loudmouth sometimes, but I never thought he could be downright evil until now.
And lastly, while there are a few great ones, it still lacks that truly knockout nugget such as Big Trouble In Little Quahog. Nevetheless...
My rankings:
Disney's The Reboot: 9.2/10 (The parodies are clever and hilarious, and serve as a sharp satire of the reboot and spin-off industry)
Christmas Is Coming: 9/10 (One of the craziest plots they've done, but hysterical)
Rich Old Stewie: 9/10 (Really cool "What if" episode)
Cat Fight: 9/10 (Unlike all other Brian vs. Quagmire stories, this one actually ends happily. How refreshing!)
Baby Stewie: 8.7/10 (Just like the season finale has a lot of dog Brian, this one has a lot of Stewie acting like a real baby, which makes for a hilarious ride. The plot resolves a little too easily though.)
Absolutely Babulous: 8.5/10 (One of the surprising gems)
Peter & Lois' Wedding: 8.4/10 (So much better than The Simpsons' That 90s Show)
Better Off Meg: 8.4/10 (The most underrated one of the season)
Shanksgiving: 8.4/10
Short Cuts: 8.3/10 (Strange plot, but still very funny)
Movin' In' (Principal Shepherd's Song): 8.2/10 (I would die for a real Flunky and Swishy book)
The Movement: 8.2/10 (Eeeeh third act, the first two are really good though)
Undergrounded: 8/10 (I struggle to remember much from it, but it was solid)
Start Me Up: 8/10
Coma Guy: 8/10 (It's good, but Lois' horrible behavior in it bumps off points)
Connie's Celica: 7.7/10 (Interesting story, but fizzles out at the end)
Bri-Da: 7.7/10 (I do love the bond between Brian and Ida. Quagmire is a big brat however)
Heart Burn: 7.5/10 (First segment is just okay, the other two are good. The Fatal Attraction spoof was my favorite)
Holly Bibble: 7.3/10 (Decent, but they've done better anthologies)
Yacht Rocky: 6.8/10 (It didn't yacht rock, but at least I didn't hate it. Fuck that ending though, especially the Casey Kasem extension.)
